Matrix places first in newspaper contest

The staff of Matrix was very pleased to learn on Friday that the American Scholastic Press Association awarded them first place in the 2011-’12 Newspaper Review and Contest. This was Matrix’s first time competing in this contest.

Matrix once frequently entered such competitions, but stopped competing for several years.

Annual physics field trip canceled due to scheduling

Physics students at Athens High School are facing a change of pace with the cancellation of the annual field trip to King’s Island. The trip has been an AHS tradition since 1983. While many students grieve the change, alternative activities are being planned and physics fun will still live on. According to Athens High Physics teacher Tom Stork, this year the trip was canceled because of scheduling difficulties.

Meek, Powell talk tragedy at senior assembly

The school administration calls a meeting for seniors to discuss the many tragedies that occured this year involving AHS staff and students. Seniors were encouraged to actively look out for each other and for underclassmen. All students are welcome to speak with an AHS adminstrator or teacher should they need to do so.

Silversmithing class is cut, but new classes are in store for next year

AHS will face several changes in the upcoming years. Students will be required to take 3.5 credits of history instead of three to graduate; the new required elective is “Econ/Personal Finance” on the college preparatory level. Other new classes include “Plant and Horticulture Science” and “Technology of Food,” while the popular class “Silversmithing” will be cut.

Kony: To find or not to find

The KONY2012 campaign goes viral – really viral – and the effort has received both heavy support and heavy criticism. Some argue that, once you cut through the emotion and sensationalism of the video, its goal is for military intervention in Central Africa or imperialism. Some point out that the Ugandan government, with whom our armies would pair up with to find Kony, is guilty of horrible human rights violations itself.

Rainy day thoughts and reflections

I’m writing this piece on Monday, March 12, 2012. I woke up today exhausted; an inconvenient daylight savings took place yesterday, and at 6:30 a.m. it was cold and dark and rainy. I went to school, took a French test, then freaked out with my classmates about how hard that test was and how much I needed a good grade.
